John Watkins is Head of Gardens and Landscape at English Heritage, and so has been involved with the stories of some of the nation’s most important gardens and landscapes.
Historic gardens can decline and rise again, sometimes imperceptibly, sometimes dramatically, according to stewardship. Lost gardens can be bought back to life. Thriving gardens can wither through neglect, or become overly manicured.
John will examine how the meaning of historic gardens changes over time, looking at the dynamic work being undertaken by English Heritage.
John Watkins has also co-authored the standard work on the management of historic gardens.
