An intensive 4 day course in portraiture with BP Portrait Award 2019 winner Charlie Schaffer.

This course will delve deep into the process of drawing and painting from a life model. Participants will learn how to create authentic, expressive portraits that resonate with the subject and viewer. You will be taught how to look closely and properly understand the model. The course emphasises the importance of drawing as the foundation for portraiture. Students will begin with preliminary sketches, trying different angles and light conditions, before moving on to a complete portrait over the final two days.

This course is designed for people who have some previous experience, and want to develop their skills further. We keep our classes deliberately small, to allow for intense tuition and personalised advice.  It is not suitable for complete beginners.

Day 1

Morning: Drawing from the model using conte (compressed charcoal) with the aim of learning to look closer, see how everything is interconnected and trying to pay equal attention to all aspects of the head.

Afternoon: Painting in monochrome – getting used to transferring the way of looking/seeing learnt in the morning into paint.

Day 2

Morning: Drawing from the model using conte (compressed charcoal) with the aim of learning to look closer, see how everything is interconnected and trying to pay equal attention to all aspects of the head.

Afternoon: 3 quick paintings using only 3 colours with the aim of loosening up with paint, to not be so precious with the work and to see the infinite possibilities available for creating a painting.

Day 3

Morning: Drawing from the model using conte (compressed charcoal) and ink with the aim of learning to look closer, see how everything is interconnected and trying to pay equal attention to all aspects of the head.

Afternoon: The start of a 2 day pose using an extended palette.

Day 4

Morning and Afternoon: Continuation of painting begun previous afternoon.
