Event Navigation

Charleston Farmhouse nestles at the foot of the rolling South Downs, close to the famous image of the Long Man of Wilmington carved into the chalky hillside.

The beautiful flowerbeds are formed from the limey soil and its ponds are dug into the white bedrock.

If you garden on chalk, Charleston is a wonderful place to be inspired to celebrate your garden, its soil and everything that you can grow.

Don’t wish for rhodendrons!

Join Juliet Sargeant to learn about all the chalk-loving plants like, clematis, iris, campanulas, lavender. How to cultivate them and how to combine them to create beautiful chalk gardens.

No design or gardening experience is necessary.

By the end of the day you will:

  • Understand about the formation of chalky soil and how to keep it healthy
  • Know about plant requirements on a chalky soil and how to look after your plants
  • Know the best plants for a chalky soil
  • Be able to combine plants for a chalk planting scheme
