Event Navigation

Amy Isles Freeman hand turns wooden plates and then decorates them with her trademark, joyful, bold designs. In this one day workshop, Amy will guide you through the process of creating a beautiful plate of your own.

You will work on a ‘naked’ wooden plate. The day begins with a tour of the House for inspiration, looking at colour and pattern, and the many examples of hand decorated ceramics. You will then spend some time doing drawing exercises, experimenting with mark making and thinking about colour and shape, line quality and texture.

After a delicious artisan lunch, you will spend the afternoon translating this prepatory work into a design for your plate. You design can incorporate elements of what is important and meaningful to you. At the end of the workshop you will have created a something both beautiful and useful for your home, an heirloom, or a gift for somebody special.

About the tutor

Amy Isles Freeman is an established artist based in Brighton. Since graduating from Falmouth Art School in 2014, Amy has created a range of hand turned, hand painted wooden bowls that have been stocked by Le Bon Marché, Paris, and Liberty, London. Amy’s work straddles the worlds of fine art, illustration and craft, pairing the decorative and colourful with clean and pleasing pieces of woodturning. Alongside the bowls, Amy creates painted furniture, hand painted clothing and runs workshops, guiding people through painting their own wooden objects.

Exploring themes of female sexuality, freedom and joy, there is a narrative to Amy’s work that is current and exciting, putting her amongst the cohort of young female artists making celebratory feminist work.

Amy was selected as one of The Sunday Times’ ‘Next Year’s Faces Now’, as well as featuring in many regional and national publications such as Homes and Gardens, The FT’s How to Spend it, The Evening Standard and Cornwall Life.
