The Garden at Charleston with Peter Owen-Jones

&Dr Darren Clarke & Mark Divall; part of The Festival of the Garden at Charleston

Saturday 29 Jul 6:00PM
AT Charleston
Tickets: £10 - £12

Tom Stuart-Smith, Dr Darren Clarke, Peter Owen-Jones and Mark Divall discuss the Garden at Charleston and how it has been shaped over time both by former inhabitants and the wider Downland landscape. Speakers will place the Garden in its wider Downland setting, looking at the Garden in the context of the Downland economy and the Firle Estate.

Curator Dr Darren Clarke will talk about the creation of the Garden at Charleston in early 20th Century by Roger Fry, Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, the transformation from ‘a sea of mud’ to the artist’s Garden we know today.

Former Head Gardener Mark Divall will talk about the restoration of the Garden by Sir Peter Shepheard in the 1980s, and gardening at Charleston in the present tense.
