Andrew Motion’s 2006 memoir, In the Blood, explores his mother’s death following a riding accident when he was 17. This defining event is revisited in his new collection, Essex Clay. The result is a stunning biographical verse sequel which admits that final resolutions are impossible.
Andrew Motion was Poet Laureate from 1999 to 2009. He is now Homewood Professor in the Arts at John Hopkins University in America. He is co-founder of the online Poetry Archive and biographer of Philip Larkin and John Keats.
