Behind the Design: ‘Abstract’ by Vanessa Bell

For the first time, Vanessa Bell’s 1930s textile design ‘Abstract’ is exclusively available to purchase at Charleston.

For the first time, Vanessa Bell’s 1930s textile design ‘Abstract’ is exclusively available to purchase at Charleston. This striking fabric holds a special connection to the Bloomsbury group, having been a favourite of Virginia Woolf, who used it to upholster armchairs at her Sussex home, Monk’s House.

Originally commissioned by artist and interior designer Allan Walton, ‘Abstract’ stands out among Bell’s designs of the time with its regimented circles and cross-hatched patterns. The warm tones of brown and red reflect Bell’s more measured and sophisticated approach during this period, while the bold, graphic quality recalls her earlier work for the Omega Workshops.

Now available by the metre at Charleston’s online and in-person shops, the fabric is printed via rotary screen using high-performance vat dyes. It is a dual-purpose fabric, suitable for both upholstery and drape. This is a rare opportunity to bring Bloomsbury design into your home.
