Nigel Shafran: Compost Pictures 2008-9

2 April – 13 June

Nigel Shafran’s photographs are quiet observations of daily life, often focusing on deliberately low key subject matter. He continues this interest with ‘Compost Pictures 2008-9’, a new series of works that create a visual diary of an ordinary and easily overlooked situation, made beautiful. His work has been shown previously in ‘How we are: Photographing Britain’ at the Tate, 2007 and features in a variety of public collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Exhibition organised in partnership with Photoworks.

Ravilious Woodcuts

18 June – 30 August

The foremost wood engraver of his time, Ravilious came to prominence working in this medium before becoming well known as painter. Heavily influenced by English Romanticism his work has a deep connection with the East Sussex landscape. This exhibition runs alongside a major Ravilious retrospective at Towner and draws from both the Towner’s collection and works on loan to present a detailed look at these highly respected woodcuts.

Quentin Bell – Illustrator

10 September – 31 October

Art historian, biographer, painter, potter and sculptor, Quentin Bell was certainly a man of many arts. As we celebrate the centenary of his birth, this exhibition will focus on a very intimate side of his prodigious output; the illustrations he produced for his close family. At the heart of this theme are his illuminated children's books; complete fantastical worlds captured in word and image to the delight of his children and nieces.
