At Charleston young people have the opportunity to experience first hand the home of two artists, Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, whose work helped to shape British modern art. Charleston also has a strong literary heritage -Vanessa Bell’s sister, Virginia Woolf, was one of many writers who spent time here.
The best day for families with very young children to visit is Sunday. On Sundays there are stewards in each of the rooms so that you can see the house at your own pace. There is also a children’s trail that you can do together as you go around the house. This free flow system means that you can leave the house and return as often as you like or need.
On Wednesday to Saturday visiting the house is by guided tour, which families can find restrictive at times. Tours last for at least one hour and are very interesting for grown ups and older children but can feel a lot longer for our very young visitors.
Pushchairs are not permitted in the house, neither is food or drink. Slings worn at the front are fine, but not worn on the back.
We have a lovely picnic field which visitors are welcome to use. The cafe offers a delicious selection of homemade cakes and a children’s menu.
The garden is an ideal space for families to relax, read, sketch or investigate the vegetable patch.
You might also want to take a walk up onto the South Downs Way or take a bike ride along the Old Coach Road which runs along the back of Charleston.
We have a baby change facility within the accessible bathroom.
