SCHOOL VISITS

As the home of artists, Charleston was a place of freedom, invention and creative endeavour and is now a richly stimulating resource for primary and secondary art and design pupils. The artists who lived at Charleston painted personal and domestic things, like their friends and their home, and decorated useful objects like chairs and beds. The resource pack and school visits reveal the artists as real people, who sometimes did things badly. This challenges the idea that artists are special people, effortlessly producing great work and is therefore an invaluable experience for pupils starting out and building confidence. Charleston is not so much a monument to 'great art' but a family home, where children grew up and played. Therefore pupils won't be daunted by what they see, but inspired to create their own works of art.

All educational visits are led by Charleston Trust education staff.
