School visits

As the home of artists, Charleston was a place of freedom, invention and creative endeavour and it is now a richly stimulating resource for primary and secondary art and design pupils.

The artists who lived at Charleston often found their subjects in the domestic surroundings of the house and garden as well as in their friends, family and pets, and they decorated many of the objects they used every day. The resource pack and school visits reveal the artists as people whose work, while giving a sense of spontaneity and freedom, was in fact carefully planned and worked out in advance. This challenges the idea that artists are special people, effortlessly producing great work and is therefore an invaluable experience for pupils starting out and building confidence.

Charleston has always been a family home, where children grew up and played alongside artists and writers at work. Therefore pupils won’t be daunted by what they see, but inspired to create their own works of art.
