We recommend that you allow half a day to see Charleston.

During popular times you may not be able enter the house straight away. Because the rooms are small and the objects and surfaces fragile we have to limit the amount of visitors in the house at any one time. There are plenty of other things to see and do at Charleston.

Wednesdays - Saturdays: Entry to the house is by guided tour only.

Fridays: Our Friday Tours focus on a particular aspect of the life of the house. There is a new Friday Tour every two years. These are 90 minutes long and include the kitchen, a room not seen in other tours. Not available in July and August, or Fridays 15th or 22nd May.

Important information for Friday 25th June: Tours will be suspended between 1.40 and 3.40 on this day. We apologise for any inconvenience caused, but recommend that you avoid this time if you plan to visit us on this day.

Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays: Rooms are stewarded and you are able to see the house at your own pace. These are the best days to bring small children. There are no tours on these days but our stewards are available to answer your questions.

Grounds: Take time to enjoy the walled garden, our changing programme of exhibitions in our gallery, our Craft Council accredited shop and Charleston's café. We also have space for you to enjoy picnics and from mid June 2009 we will have picnic blankets available to rent in the shop.

Rural setting: Charleston is situated in the heart of the South Downs, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). We are a short walk or ride from the South Downs Way and can be found at OS TQ 490 069. There is a trail running through Charleston's grounds that will take you to the top of the Firle Beacon for views of the sea and back to Charleston by a different path - about an hour long round trip. (NB: steep in places)

* We have been able to translate our visitor information with the kind help of two of our volunteers, one a native French speaker and the other a native German speaker. We would like very much to translate this information into more languages. If you feel you would be able to help, please see volunteering at Charleston.
