CURATOR LED TOURS

For a truly unique experience of Charleston, our Curator will lead you on an in depth journey around the house. Dr Wendy Hitchmough will spend up to two hours with your group, sharing her specialist knowledge and passion for the house and tailoring the tour to your particular interests.

Private Guided Tours

One of our experienced guides can take groups of up to ten people on a tour of the house outside of public opening hours.  Guarantee your visit to Charleston and chose from any one of the below tours. We can also arrange catering for you outside the Charleston Cafe’s opening hours. Prices start from £85 for a 60 minute morning tour.

The Charleston tour: an excellent introduction to Charleston, this hour-long tour tells the story of Vanessa Bell, Duncan Grant and their family and friends from their arrival at the house in 1916 to the creation of the Charleston Trust in the 1980s. 60 mins.

Bloomsbury in Sussex: Similar to the Charleston tour, this tour highlights the links between Charleston and other Bloomsbury sites in Sussex. Perfect if your group also plans to visit Monks House and Berwick Church. 60 mins.

Collecting at Charleston: Asking what what we can learn from the collecting habits of Vanessa Bell, Clive Bell and Duncan Grant, this tour explores how their collections came together to create this vibrant and individual home. 90 mins. Includes the kitchen.

From Omega: the Bloomsbury interior: This tour looks in detail at Bloomsbury decoration through Charleston’s unique interiors. We explore how pieces are made and the special effects of different materials – from pelmets to painted furniture. Cupboard doors and chests of draws are opened to reveal glimpses of textiles and ceramics not normally on public display. 90 mins. Includes the kitchen.

The Sisters Tour: This tour looks at the lives of the sisters, Vanessa Bell and Virginia Woolf, the painter and writer who stood at the centre of the Bloomsbury group. The tour explores their relationship from their Victorian childhood in Kensington to Bloomsbury and ultimately to Sussex. 90 mins. Includes the kitchen.
