HOW TO SEE CHARLESTON
Charleston is presented to look as it did when the family lived here. To protect the atmosphere and collection entry to the house is timed and limited. During popular times you may not be able enter the house straight away. On very busy days we can sell out of tickets altogether. There are plenty of other things to see and do at Charleston.
Wednesdays – Saturdays: Entry to the house is by guided tour only. Tours leave throughout the afternoon every fifteen or twenty minutes and there are nine spaces on each tour. Tickets are sold on a first come first served basis for the next available tour only. We regret we cannot take advance bookings.
Fridays: Our Friday Tours focus on a particular aspect of the life of the house. There is a new Friday Tour every two years. These are 90 minutes long and include the kitchen, a room not seen in other tours. This particular tour is available every Friday throughout the season, except during July and August, 6th April, 25th May, 1st June and 28th September. The Charleston tour will run on these days.
Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays: Rooms are stewarded and you are able to see the house at your own pace. These are the best days to bring small children. There are no tours on these days but our stewards are available to answer your questions. Eight tickets are sold for entry into the house every ten minutes. Once you arrive on site you can book for any time slot for which there are tickets available.
Grounds
Take time to enjoy the walled garden, our changing programme of exhibitions in our gallery, our Craft Council accredited shop and Charleston’s café. We also have space for you to enjoy picnics, and picnic blankets are available to rent in the shop.
Rural setting: Charleston is situated in the heart of the South Downs, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). We are a short walk or ride from the South Downs Way and can be found at OS TQ 490 069.
There is a trail running through Charleston’s grounds that will take you to the top of the Firle Beacon for views of the sea and back to Charleston by a different path – about an hour long round trip. (NB: steep in places)
* We have been able to translate our visitor information with the kind help of volunteers. We would like very much to translate this information into more languages. If you feel you would be able to help, please see volunteering at Charleston.
