By remembering Charleston in your will you can help to secure Charleston’s long-term future. The contribution you make will ensure that generations to come are able to enjoy this unique house, collection and garden in the same way that you have.
Legacies have already played a huge part in making Charleston what it is today. Many of the most important pieces in the collection have been gifts from individuals who have wanted to see objects or artworks returned to Charleston.
Equally significant however, are the gifts of money that have been made in the 20 years since the house first opened to the public. Charleston receives no government or public funding and is entirely dependent on the support provided by private individuals and grants to fund all the areas of its work, from conservation and maintenance on the house and collection, to new acquisitions, education and research.
By remembering Charleston in your will you are helping to safeguard the future of this unique and beautiful house, ensuring that it continues to flourish.
How to leave a legacy to Charleston
Should you wish to make a gift in your will, there are various ways in which you could pass on your enjoyment of Charleston to future generations.
- You could specify the gift you would like to make to Charleston in your will: this could be an amount of money or a particular item (such as a work of art, a piece of property, or shares.)
- Alternatively, you may choose to make a residuary gift. The residue is the remaining value of your estate after all other bequests have been met and administration costs settled. It is possible to leave the total residue, or a share of the residue, as a gift to The Charleston Trust.
Because The Charleston Trust is a charity, any gift made to us is exempt from Inheritance Tax (S23(1) Inheritance Act 1984), therefore any potential tax to be paid out of your estate could be reduced or even eliminated entirely. We recommend that you consult a solicitor when making a will.
