‘Charleston Regained’ is a major conservation programme designed
to safeguard the collection for the future and make Charleston more
accessible. The project, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund,
began in March 2003, almost twenty years after the initial restoration
of the house. It was completed in August 2005. The buildings have
been given a complete overhaul to keep the elements out. A new
environmental management system has been installed and the house
rewired. Disabled access to the house and visitor facilities have been
upgraded and the Trust invested in a computerised database to make
the collection available online in 2005. Conservators reviewed the
condition of the entire collection and the project includes preventive
as well as remedial conservation. The changes are almost invisible.
You can see some of the work that went on behind the scenes, however,
