Teams of experts were assembled to plan and implement every detail of ‘Charleston Regained’. Architects, structural engineers, quantity surveyors, mechanical and electrical engineers, electricians, builders and the Charleston Trust’s curatorial staff and conservators worked together to protect
Charleston’s fragile interiors from the impact of essential building work. As soon as Charleston closed for the winter the collection was packed up and moved into store. The Trust’s conservators helped with the removal of awkward or unstable pieces and they worked closely with the contractors, advising on the best protection for decorated
walls and fireplaces. From November 2003 until March 2004 Charleston was a building site.
