Charleston supports research and publications exploring different aspects of
Bloomsbury and the Charleston collection. Every year it publishes three issues
of Canvas, designed to keep the Friends of Charleston up to date with the work
of the Trust and Bloomsbury developments around the world. Canvas is mailed
exclusively to the Friends with a leading article in each issue by a writer of note.
Dame Gillian Beer wrote about 'Woolf at Large' for Canvas in 2004, Matthew
Sturgis outlined the relationship between Bloomsbury and Walter Sickert and
other articles include an insight by Alison Light into the ways in which
Bloomsbury managed its servants.
Last Summer Charleston joined the celebrations for the Brighton Lesbian and Gay Pride Week. ‘A Gay Outing’ included talks by authors Simon Watney and Rose Collis investigating issues of sexual politics and gay identity within Bloomsbury. The event was held in the barn at Charleston and the first of these talks was published in Canvas. It is the first Canvas article to be published online.
‘A Gay Outing’ event and article, plus its publication on-line, was
only made possible through the generous support of the South East
Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (SEMLAC).
