Welcome to Charleston’s Iceland Poppies Short Story Competition!
To celebrate the acquisition of Vanessa Bell’s Iceland Poppies, The Charleston Trust staged THE Short Story Competition, inviting all 11-16 year olds living in East Sussex to take the painting as inspiration and pen a short story of up to 1000 words.

The stories submitted were striking in their display of imagination and originality, creating a difficult task for the competition judges responsible for deciding upon a shortlist of 18. These finalists were then invited to attend a day of writing workshops with author Lee Weatherly (Missing Abby, Child X), followed by an evening event dedicated to young readers and writers. Hosted by acclaimed children’s author William Nicholson, as part of the 2007 Small Wonder short story festival, the event saw the winners announced and the winning stories performed.
